Australian money

Money in Australia is called the Australian dollar. We have 0, , $ 20, $ 10 and $ 5 notes, and , ,.50 cent,.20 cent,.10 cent and 5 cent coins. Many shops will charge for items something like AU$ 10.99 for a product, just for marketing effect, but in the end you will pay AU$ 11.00. Capital cities expenses are usually more than country areas but sometimes it is the reverse. For example fuel can be more expensive in the country areas but not by too much. The list below is an estimate average of the prices charged in Australia, to be referred to as a guide only. It is all based on 33 years experience…

Accommodation

Budget tip: Use the Internet to get bargains and save loads of money. Some of my favourite sites are on the links page. If you’re travelling on a shoestring budget then I would suggest staying in hostels or caravan parks. They vary in price based on quality and location. A word of warning caravan parks especially along the coast are not what they used to be. These days they have almost resort style facilities so they can be just as expensive as staying in a motel.

Government Funding for Sport in Australia

Australia has a reputation for providing the world with legendary sports men and woman, world class facilities, sporting technology and arguably the worlds number one development base. With Australia being a first world nation and a country with such a solid financial base; it is interesting to look at government funding in sport and recreation activities.

The ABS (Australian Bureau of Statistics) conducted a study for the financial year of 2000/2001 into government funding in sport and recreation activities. In this study there were various conclusive results that were found.

Government funding for sport and recreation activities is split into three different sectors, National (Australian Commonwealth) Government funding, State-Territory Government funding and Local Government funding. In the research study of the financial year of 2000/2001 by the ABS it was found that the total expenditure for sport and recreation activities was $2,124.2 million. Of this figure National Government contributed $198.9 million, State and Territory contributed $875.2 million and Local Government contributed $1,050.1 million.

The figure of $2,124.2 Million (2000/2001) also includes expenditure on the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games. While other state and territory governments contributed funds to build facilities and host international athletes to compete and train, it was primarily the national and New South Wales state governments that contributed most to the event. The New South Wales state government contribution was $382.3 million, while the national government estimated figure was $71.8 million.

How to Experience Heart Pumping Adventure Travel in Australia

It was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life and half way through this adventure, I wished I had never been stupid enough to try it. Yet at the finish of this adrenaline pumping experience, my tortured body was ready to start again.

How crazy is that?

Our gut wrenching adventure was trying to tame North Queensland’s mighty Tully River clinging to flimsy inflatable rafts and battling rapids and rocks on our watery journey from the top of the Great Dividing Range down to the coastal plain.

Adventure travel is big in Australia but few can match the pulse raising thrills of wrestling a tiny inflatable raft against the power of a raging torrent. I tried it and lived to tell the tale with memories that will last forever.

 Fear and Anticipation.

As our “Raging Thunder” bus towing a trailer loaded with rafts climbed to the top of the Great Dividing Range, the nervous group of men and women shared mixed emotions. Our admiration for the beauty of the pristine rainforest was tempered by the fear of the challenges that lay ahead.

Our fears turned to terror when we saw and heard our pathway to the bottom of the range. It was like a scene from the movie “Deliverance”. A fearsome white and brown bucking bronco was eagerly waiting for us.

One nervous backpacker from Tulsa Oklahoma took one look at the white, foaming torrent and said, “I can’t do it!” Tearfully, she retreated to the safety of the bus.
